Moon Phases and Magickal Work
The Moon is a mysterious and all
powerful force. It guides the flow of magickal energies.
Working spells and rituals with the phases of the Moon bring a higher
force into your magickal workings. When the Moon is waxing, it grows
larger in the sky. This phase lasts until the Full Moon. From the Full
Moon to the New Moon, which is then the waning phase where the Moon grows
smaller until it eventually is not visible to the eye for three nights.
This is when it is often referred to as the Dark of the Moon or the Black
Moon. Then the Moon starts once again to grow toward fullness.
The
waxing Moon is the optimal time to do a spell for growth, beginning new
projects, initiation and enhancement. During the waning Moon, do spells to
cleanse negative influences, lessen or remove obstacles and illness,
neutralize enemies, and to remove harm. The three days after the New Moon
are the most powerful times to work spells for growth and beginnings which
are best completed during the Full Moon. The days just before the Full
Moon are the most powerful times for fruition and completion. The Black
Moon is the most promising time for banishing and neutralizing spells.
Remember that even though the Moon looks Full Moon in the sky for two or
three nights, it is exact at the time posted on your calendar. Anything
after that time is a waning moon. Do your Full Moon spell before the exact
time listed.
(The First Quarter is the point between the New Moon and the
Full Moon. The Last Quarter is the mid-point between the Full Moon and New
Moon.)

Imbolc: also
called Imbolg, Candlemas, Oimbolc, Brigantia, Imbolic
Imbolc is a happy time. It is the return of
light to world as we leave the dark
winter. It is also a time to honour the goddess Brigid (pronounced breed)
Ostara: Also called Spring Equinox
Ostara marks the first true day of spring. The
Goddess blankets the Earth with fertility,
bursting forth from her sleep, as the God stretches and grows to maturity.
He walks
the greening fields and delights in the abundance of Nature.
Beltaine: Also called May Day, May Eve
Beltane is celebrating the union of the Goddess
and God, and thus is also a
fertility festival. Also celebrates the returning sun (or Sun God).
Litha: Also called Summer Solstice,
Midsummer
Litha
is when the time for play starts to wane and the time for study starts to
wax.
At this time of year the Goddess enters her mother aspect.
Lammas: Also called Lughnasa
Lugnasadh Is a time of mourning because of the
passing of the God.
It is a time of remembrance of all that the God has given you that year,
and it is the time of the first harvest.
Mabon: also called Fall Equinox, Autumn
Equinox
Mabon
is the time of the final harvest of crops. It is a time of rest and a time
of balance, because day and night are of equal length.
Samhain: also called: Halloween, All
Hallow's Eve, Samana, Strega
Samhain is a time of remembrance of those who
have passed into the next life.
It is a time when the veil that separates the seen from the unseen is at
it's thinnest.
During Samhain it is very easy to communicate with those "other" realms.
Divination comes easy at this time of year.
Yule: Also called Winter Solstice
Yule is the celebration of the rebirth of the
God who died at Lammas.
Yule is a dark time. During this time of the year we await the return of
light. |
